What’s her story? Born in 1983 in Oxford England, Gugu Mbatha-Raw is the daughter of Anne Raw, an English Nurse, and Patrick Mbatha, a doctor from the Republic of South Africa. Her surname is made up of both her parents’ and her first name is the shortened version ‘Gugulethu’, a contraction of igugu lethu that means ‘Our Pride’ in Zulu. Then at 18, she moved to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2001, where her career as an actress started to take off.

Also, she landed a role in the soon-to-be released ‘Belle’ by Amma Asante that is about an illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral that is raised by her aristocratic great-uncle. It’s been very well received on the film festival circuit and is sure to win crowds over once on general release.
What else should we know?She’s shared the stage with some big names, including current Spider-Man Andrew Garfield and the amazing Jude Law in 2009 for Hamlet.

Well, sore subject as the star was actually engaged to Harry Lloyd, who played Viserys Targaryen in the Game of Thrones, you know, the guy whose head was melted by a ‘crown’. They were connected until 2013 and since then, she’s kept things on the low and who can blame her.
What’s Next? There are two major roles coming up this year. The first is in ‘Blackbird’, which stars Minnie Driver and Danny Glover in a film about a talented young musician on the brink of super stardom struggles with the pressure of her new-found success.
