Nick Barose captured the behind-the-scenes moments with his all-star clients.
“It felt kinda deja vu,” makeup pro Nick Barose tells Pret-a-Reporter of dashing between Lupita Nyong’o and Gugu Mbatha-Raw for this year’s Met Gala. “Like I did in 2014, when Lupita wore that green Prada and Gugu in Lanvin.”
Although Barose usually plays with colorful palettes, this year, he translated the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” theme as “more monochromatic, not loud or flashy. Just fresh, modern and sleek.”
In between creating two of the night's loveliest looks, Barose snapped pics of all the action.
BALANCING ACT
First stop: The Pierre Hotel to prep Mbatha-Raw. “I had a little pow-wow with my assistants, Misaki, who I left with Gugu, and Michael, who stayed with me when I went to Lupita later. It’s all about good planning when you have to prep a few people for one event.”
THE SET UP
Assistant Misaki set up the station for Mbatha-Raw, including the Laura Mercier products that created her strong-yet-ethereal look (metallic lilac on the eyelids!), which beautifully complemented her Gabriela Hearst gown. The addition of fresh lilies and candles to the table “always brings good vibes,” says Barose.

NEXT STOP
The makeup set-up for Nyong'o: White roses, an array of Lancome products and Barose's “lucky cat makeup bag.” Outside on the street, “people start to gather, even though it’s still three hours before the start will leave for the red carpet,” explains Barose.
METAL FINISH
Her Calvin Klein dress was out of this world, so we kept the makeup kind of tame,” says Barose of the metallic pewter on the lids (Lancome Color Design 5 Pan Eyeshadow Palette in Gris Fumee) and a hint of bronze on the lips (Lancome L’Absolu Rouge in Henne). Also, the hair was a moment of its own, not to be detracted from.
