Gugu painted by Joe Simpson from start to finish

I'm delighted to announce that the 6th subject for ACT is Gugu Mbatha-Raw! She's going to be brilliant to paint -

Chuffed that 'Black Mirror : San Junipero' won an Emmy for 'Outstanding Television Movie' starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw. My painting of her as Cleopatra should be finished in a couple of weeks...

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is coming to my studio this week to see my finished oil painting of her as Cleopatra - I'll post pictures of the painting when she's seen it... it's always slightly nerve racking! Here's an initial black and white study, Acrylic on Paper - 90 x 60cm.

Here's a background detail of my oil painting of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Cleopatra, with guards in disco armour.

A work in progress preview of the background of my painting of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Cleopatra. I'm painting like mad!

Here's a background detail I've been working on for my painting of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Cleopatra.

*NEW PANTING* Here's the 6th painting from my project ACT // Gugu Mbatha-Raw in her chosen role as Cleopatra - Oil on Canvas 135 x 60cm.

Gugu is one of the cast reading from Nelson Mandela: The Presidential Years

Nelson Mandela: The Presidential Years

HIGHER FEES APPLY. Former South African President and ex-ANC leader Nelson Mandela...

Part of London Literature Festival
An introduction from Rt Hon Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education, and a cast including Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Adjoa Andoh, Adrian Lester, Ben Okri and Lemn Sissay bring the long-awaited sequel to Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom to life.
Watch as Mandela’s reflections on his time in power are performed in this exclusive London launch of Dare Not Linger: The Presidential Years. The evening includes a panel discussing Mandela’s legacy in a troubled world, featuring his co-author, South African novelist and poet Mandla Langa, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Sello Hatang, Lord Peter Hain and Bonnie Greer, chaired by Jon Snow.
This new book draws heavily on the second volume of memoirs that Mandela began writing in the last days of his presidency (but was unable to finish), and tells the story of the transition from decades of apartheid rule and the challenges Mandela overcame to make a reality of his vision for a liberated South Africa.
What are the enduring lessons that can be drawn from Mandela’s time in power? How can the landmark achievements of the Nobel Peace Prize winner inspire the next generation?
The book’s title, Dare Not Linger, is derived from the closing paragraphs of Long Walk to Freedom: ‘I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.’
