The 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards took place Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton and there were several Black women involved in projects honored at the ceremony celebrating LGBTQ representation.
The ceremony was hosted by Seeso’s Take My Wife star Cameron Esposito and Empire’s Jussie Smollett lead a special tribute to victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting that included a powerful performance by Broadway star Cynthia Erivo.
One highlight of the night was the “San Junipero” episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw winning the Outstanding Individual Episode award! Set in 1987 in a beach resort town named San Junipero, the episode tells the story of Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis), a shy young woman visiting the town and falling in love with a local, Kelly (Mbatha-Raw). The episode received critical acclaim and became a favorite among Black Mirror fans.
