Amma Asante won the BAFTA Most Promising Newcomer award in 2004 for her first film, A Way of Life. It took her 7 long years to find the story of Belle and Bette, two beauties in a portrait, given equal standing, even though it was during the era of slavery in England. She found her Belle in Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who you may not recognize from Undercovers, Touch, or Larry Crowne right off the bat. They talked to David Poland about the process, the film that emerged, and their lives in the film business.
