The '90s look shines on.

The Look: A mercury metal ring embroidered silver slip dress from Narciso Rodriguez's spring 2017 collection.
The Wearer: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who stars as Plumette in the upcoming live-action production of Beauty and the Beast
The Event: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's 8th Annual Governor's Awards, which took place on Saturday evening in Hollywood. The actress was joined by the likes of Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman and Ryan Reynolds on the red carpet.
Why It Matters: These days, slip dresses are a dime a dozen, but this one is a shining reminder of where the trend came from, at least in the recent past. Mbatha-Raw's silver spaghetti strap style brings to mind Carolyn Bessette's classically simple wedding gown. New York designer Rodriguez also designed that quietly elegant dress, which Bessette chose for her 1996 wedding to John Kennedy Jr.. Sadly, that fairytale ended in tragedy, but the image of the dress and its wearer is still one of the most iconic of the 1990s.
Reinventing the slip dress style for today, Rodriguez added an edge with mercury metal ring embroidery on the top portion of the bodice. The perfectly fitted skirt fits flawlessly over Mbatha-Raw's curves, stopping just above her matching minimalist Cassadei pumps. Stylist Cristina Ehrlich kept the look monochromatic and modern with a gunmetal Bottega Veneta clutch and rings by Los Angeles-based brand Spinelli Kilcollin.
